Upon arrival, they discovered that 39-year-old Mack Jenkins had been shot following an altercation at the motel. Jenkins was transported to a residence in the 400 block of Saint Paul Street, where emergency medical services attempted life-saving measures.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led to the identification of three suspects. Harold Phillips and Alicia Pettaway were arrested and charged with felony accessory after the fact. Phillips's bond was set at $25,000, and Pettaway's at $10,000; both were held in the Nash County Jail. The primary suspect, Jessie Earl Johnson Jr., was charged with first-degree murder but remained at large immediately following the incident.
