On the night of May 24, 2023, at approximately 10:25 p.m., the Rocky Mount Police Department responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 200 block of Park Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered 36-year-old LaKendrick Terell Powell, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The subsequent investigation revealed that Powell was likely targeted, indicating the incident was not a random act of violence.
Authorities determined that 21-year-old Sincere Davis had gone to Powell's residence with the intent to commit robbery. During the attempted robbery, Davis shot and killed Powell before fleeing the scene.
Davis, who was on post-release probation from a previous robbery conviction, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was remanded to the Edgecombe County Jail without bond.
Additionally, 24-year-old Christopher Carr was arrested in connection with the case. Carr faced charges including accessory before the fact to first-degree murder, accessory after the fact to first-degree murder, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
