In a quiet home in Lowell Charter Township, Michigan, a story of profound tragedy unfolded, ending the life of three-year-old Dylan Walter Thebo. On Wednesday, September 1, 2021, deputies from the Kent County Sheriff's Office arrived at a residence on Barnsley Road SE to conduct a welfare check after concerned family members reported they had not heard from Dylan or his father in a few days.
Inside the home, they made a devastating discovery: the bodies of both Dylan and his 32-year-old father, Derek Thebo.
Subsequent autopsies performed by the Kent County Medical Examiner's Office revealed a grim reality. Both father and son had died from gunshot wounds. The investigation concluded that Derek Thebo had shot and killed his young son in a homicide before turning the gun on himself, resulting in a murder-suicide.
