In the spring of 2013, a dedicated Detroit Police Officer, Patrick Hill, a 37-year-old male, was grievously wounded in the line of duty. The incident occurred on April 2nd, when Officer Hill, a 12-year veteran of the force, and his fellow officers were attempting to apprehend a 23-year-old murder suspect on the city's east side. A shootout erupted between the officers and the suspect, who opened fire from a vehicle.
During the exchange of gunfire, the murder suspect was fatally wounded.
Tragically, Officer Hill was struck in the head. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition and remained in a coma for several months. Another officer, Sergeant Jeffrey Pacholski, was shot twice in the leg during the same incident but was later released from the hospital. A second individual who was in the vehicle with the primary suspect attempted to flee on foot but was subsequently apprehended and arrested.
After a valiant fight for his life, Officer Patrick Hill succumbed to his injuries on October 19, 2013. Subsequent investigations revealed that the fatal wound was likely the result of an accidental shooting by a fellow officer, a tragic instance of 'friendly fire.' Investigators believe a pellet from an officer's shotgun ricocheted and struck Hill. The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office reviewed the case, and no charges were filed in connection with the friendly fire incident. Officer Hill, who was remembered as a hero and a great role model, left behind a wife and four children.
