In the early hours of a Saturday in April 2017, the life of 44-year-old Devin Lowe was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence in Detroit, Michigan. Lowe, a hardworking limo driver from Luna Pier, was on the job, chauffeuring three passengers who had attended a concert. The evening took a dark turn after they left a downtown lounge with two other men.
An argument reportedly erupted in the limousine on the way to a gas station in the 2900 block of West Warren.
Shortly after arriving at the gas station around 3:10 a.m., Lowe was fatally shot multiple times. The assailants then robbed the passengers before fleeing the scene. Witnesses found Lowe in the back of his limousine and alerted the authorities, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy later confirmed that he died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was ruled a homicide.
The Detroit Police Department sought the public's help in identifying two suspects captured on surveillance video. One suspect was described as a Black male in his late 20s with short hair, wearing all black. The second was described as a Black male in his 40s with his hair in cornrows, wearing a black Chicago Bears Starter jacket and blue jeans. Authorities considered both men to be armed and dangerous.
In a significant development, DeAndre Austin was later identified, arrested in Georgia, and extradited to Michigan to face charges. Following a jury trial in March 2018, Austin was convicted of first-degree felony murder, three counts of armed robbery, and felony firearm charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of Devin Lowe. Another man, Donta Etchen, was identified as the individual in the Chicago Bears jacket.
