Martinez Vaughn, a 26-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 30, 2014, in Wilmington, North Carolina. The incident occurred outside an apartment building located at 122 S. Ninth St., in a neighborhood that houses two schools, a park, and a museum. Vaughn's death was a result of a fatal shooting, and he was found dead at the scene.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the Wilmington Police Department.
On April 17, 2015, two men, Anthony Rasheed Sneed, 30, and Antonio Blake Spencer, 26, were arrested in connection with Vaughn's death. Both men were charged with second-degree murder. The arrests took place at a home on Nun Street, just a few blocks away from where the fatal shooting occurred. Sneed was also charged with speeding to elude arrest, aggressive driving, and resisting, delaying, or obstructing a public officer. Spencer faced additional charges, including possession with intent to manufacture, sell, and deliver marijuana, possession of stolen goods or property, probation violation, driving without a license, and possession of marijuana.
The investigation revealed that the same Nun Street home where the men were arrested had been hit by a round of gunfire hours after Vaughn was killed. Despite the arrests, no charges were filed in connection with the Nun Street shooting. Both Sneed and Spencer were taken to the New Hanover County jail, where they were held without bond.
Martinez Vaughn's death and the subsequent arrests of Sneed and Spencer highlight the ongoing issues of gun violence and crime in Wilmington. The case remains a stark reminder of the impact of such violence on the community and the importance of continued efforts to address these issues.
