Kelly Wilkerson, a 41-year-old African American male from Raleigh, North Carolina, was fatally shot on October 17, 2015, outside the Bill Ellis Convention Center in Wilson, North Carolina. The incident occurred during a motorcycle club's 10-year anniversary event, which both Wilkerson and the shooter, Stephen Maddox Jr., attended separately. According to reports, Maddox, a 41-year-old African American male from Durham, North Carolina, shot Wilkerson in self-defense after Wilkerson allegedly
approached and attacked him three times prior to the shooting. Maddox, who had a carry and conceal permit, testified that he feared for his life during the altercation.
Following the shooting, Maddox was charged with first-degree murder and placed in jail without bond. The case went to trial, and on July 31, 2017, Maddox was found not guilty of all charges, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and voluntary manslaughter. The jury deliberated for less than two hours before delivering the not guilty verdict.
