Rodshawn Malik Barnes, a 16-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on August 6, 2018, in Wilson, North Carolina. Rodshawn, affectionately known as "Shawn," was the son of Rodney Andre Barnes and Lateisha Huggins. On the evening of his death, Rodshawn was in his room playing video games with friends when a medical emergency call was made to the police. Upon arrival, officers were informed that Rodshawn had been taken to the hospital by his friends. Unfortunately, by the time authorities reached the hospital, Rodshawn had already been pronounced dead.
The investigation into Rodshawn's death revealed that he had been fatally shot. The police launched a thorough investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Three individuals were subsequently charged in connection with Rodshawn's death. Derrius J. Atkinson, 18, Savonte J. Taylor, 16, and Darius P. Taylor, 19, were all charged with involuntary manslaughter. Atkinson was arrested on August 10, 2018, after surrendering to the police, and he received a $5,000 secured bond. Savonte and Darius Taylor also surrendered to the police and were held under $3,000 secured bonds.
