Victor Stephen Trial, a 67-year-old resident of Navarre, Florida, was found dead on November 14, 2021, at the Pearl of Navarre Condominiums. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office (SRSO) launched a homicide investigation immediately after discovering his body. Deputies responded to a call around 5 p.m. and found Trial deceased with a single gunshot wound on the left side of his upper back.
The scene revealed a pool of dried blood outside the entry door, a trail of blood leading to the victim, and a spent .45 caliber shell casing inside the apartment. Witnesses reported hearing a possible gunshot around 1 p.m. that day, and security footage captured a suspect entering the condo complex around that time.
The investigation led to the arrest of John Patrick Guillebeau, a 60-year-old man from Ellijay, Georgia, who was a childhood friend of Trial. Guillebeau was charged with first-degree premeditated murder. According to the sheriff, the motive for the murder stemmed from an incident in the past, although specific details were not disclosed due to the ongoing investigation. Guillebeau was arrested in Alabama and extradited to Florida, where he was held in the Santa Rosa County Jail.
The case against Guillebeau progressed through the legal system, culminating in his conviction in February 2024. He was sentenced to nearly 40 years in a Florida prison for the murder of Victor Stephen Trial. The trial revealed that Guillebeau had meticulously planned the murder, as evidenced by his actions captured on security footage, including changing his appearance before entering Trial's building. The conviction and sentencing brought some closure to the case, highlighting the tragic end of a long-standing relationship between the victim and his childhood friend.
