Tevin Kendrick, a 22-year-old African American male from Durham, North Carolina, was found dead on January 18, 2016, in the parking lot of the Efland-Cheeks Community Center in Efland, NC. His body was discovered near a white Nissan with multiple gunshot wounds on his torso. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m., and witnesses reported hearing several gunshots in rapid succession.
Authorities believe that Kendrick, who had a criminal history, was targeted in this shooting.
The investigation into Kendrick's death revealed that he had been shot multiple times, and his body was found lying on the ground near a white passenger car with the trunk open. The shooting was estimated to have occurred more than four hours before the body was discovered. The nearby Efland-Cheeks Elementary School was not involved in the crime scene, but the area around the building was blocked off as a precaution.
In the months following Kendrick's death, the Orange County Sheriff's Office made several arrests in connection to the case. On March 14, 2016, authorities arrested Jermauciyae Abram and charged him with the murder of Tevin Kendrick. Savian Jacob Turrentine was also arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to a felony. Investigators stated that the murder was not random and that additional suspects were anticipated to be charged.
On March 15, 2016, a third suspect, Barry Holt, was charged with murder in connection to Kendrick's death. Holt was already in the Durham County jail on a stolen gun charge at the time of his arrest. He was being held without bond. The investigation into Kendrick's murder was ongoing, and authorities continued to search for additional information and suspects related to the case.
