Jaquan McBryde, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on September 25, 2017, in Fayetteville, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the area of Knotty Elm Loop and Bending Birch Lane in the LaFayette Park subdivision. On the night of the shooting, Fayetteville police officers responded to reports of gunshots and found McBryde deceased at the scene.
Another victim, Paul Coleman, an 18-year-old male, was also injured in the shooting and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to the back.
The investigation into McBryde's death led to the identification of several suspects. Cartier Simpson, an 18-year-old male, turned himself in to Cumberland County investigators a few days after the incident. Simpson was charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was held without bond at the Cumberland County Detention Center.
In 2018, Fayetteville officers identified Jonathan Dawson, a 32-year-old male, as another suspect in the case. Dawson was arrested in Raleigh and charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, attempted robbery, discharging a weapon into an occupied property, and felony conspiracy. He was held at the Wake County Detention Center under no bond and was later transferred to Cumberland County.
Additionally, Ky T. Locklear, an 18-year-old male, was wanted for questioning in connection with McBryde's death. Locklear was also wanted for questioning by the Hope Mills Police Department in connection with a separate shooting incident that occurred in January 2018. He had an outstanding order for arrest related to a felony probation violation out of Hoke County and was considered armed and dangerous.
