On October 28, 2023, at approximately 4:49 a.m., Fayetteville Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 3000 block of Tamarack Drive in Fayetteville, North Carolina. Upon arrival, they discovered 41-year-old Garon Webb suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Webb was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation led to the arrest of 40-year-old Kortne Shapiro Aliaff Melvin, a resident of Fayetteville.
Melvin was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Webb's death. He was apprehended on October 31, 2023, and is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center without bond.
Further inquiries revealed that Melvin was involved in a series of violent incidents around the time of Webb's murder. On October 29, 2023, he allegedly kidnapped and assaulted his ex-girlfriend, who resided in the same apartment complex as Webb. Melvin was reportedly wearing an ankle monitor due to prior assault charges involving the same woman. Data from the monitor placed him near the crime scene at the time of Webb's murder. Additionally, witnesses reported seeing Melvin firing a handgun in the area on the night of the homicide.
Ballistic evidence further linked Melvin to the crime. Shell casings recovered from the scene matched those found in the parking lot where he was seen firing a weapon, indicating they were discharged from the same firearm. These findings, combined with witness testimonies and electronic monitoring data, strengthened the case against Melvin.
The motive behind Webb's murder remains under investigation. Authorities have not disclosed any known connection between Webb and Melvin beyond their proximity as neighbors. The Fayetteville Police Department continues to gather information and has urged anyone with relevant details to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
