On October 21, 2023, at approximately 9:27 p.m., Fayetteville police responded to a shooting incident in the 1500 block of Slater Avenue, near the Smith Recreation Center and Fayetteville State University. Upon arrival, officers discovered that four individuals had sustained gunshot wounds and had been transported to a local hospital. Among the victims was 31-year-old Emmanuel Lashon Smith, who succumbed to his injuries at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
