Eskinder Dawit Asefaw, a 26-year-old man, was fatally shot on April 20, 2018, in east Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred in the 1500 block of Wembley Drive, where Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to a call at approximately 4:48 p.m. Upon arrival, officers found Eskinder with an apparent gunshot wound. He was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead the following morning on April 21.
During the investigation, detectives identified three
teenagers as suspects in the case. Tavone Tyrik Smith, a 17-year-old, was charged with murder, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery with a dangerous weapon. Additionally, a 15-year-old juvenile, whose identity was not disclosed due to his age, was also charged with murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, conspiracy to commit murder, and conspiracy to commit armed robbery. A third suspect, another juvenile, was charged in connection with the crime on the following Monday. This 15-year-old was arrested at Garinger High School and was found in possession of a handgun and a stolen vehicle.
