Worthy stayed at the scene and was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
The legal proceedings that followed saw Worthy plead guilty to the lesser charges of involuntary manslaughter and felony obstruction of justice. During the court hearings, Worthy's attorney acknowledged the gravity of the situation, stating that something "really dumb" had happened with "really, really bad results." Worthy was sentenced to 22 to 46 months in prison. Jamie's mother, Lakeker Bright, did not attend the court proceedings, as she was reportedly unhappy with the decision to allow Worthy to plead to a lesser charge.
