Yimere Joyner, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on July 5, 2022, in Charlotte, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 6 or 7 p.m. in the stairwell of an apartment complex on Camp Greene Street. Yimere was discovered unresponsive by the police and was pronounced dead at the scene. He had been shot multiple times, and the investigation revealed that the shooting took place during a robbery in which Yimere was the victim.
Following the incident, two
teenagers were arrested and charged in connection with Yimere's murder. Demetrius Mason, 19, was arrested on July 28, 2022, in Greensboro, North Carolina, by detectives with the Greensboro Violent Criminal Apprehension Team. He was charged with murder, armed robbery with a dangerous weapon, and conspiracy to commit robbery. Nyquan Marriner, 18, was arrested earlier on July 6, 2022, and faced the same charges as Demetrius.
The case progressed to trial, and on January 25, 2025, Demetrius Mason, now 21, pled guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced to 157-201 months in prison. The guilty plea brought some closure to the case, but the loss of Yimere Joyner remains a painful memory for his family and community.
