Daquan Harris, a 23-year-old African American male from Roxboro, NC, tragically lost his life on July 27, 2018. Harris was shot in the neck around midnight while attempting to break up an argument between his girlfriend and the girlfriend of 29-year-old Terrel Wiley. The incident occurred at 326 Owens Street, where Harris was found with a gunshot wound to his neck.
Witnesses reported that Harris intervened in the argument out of concern that the police would be called if the situation escalated. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, Harris asked Wiley's girlfriend to leave. It was at this point that Wiley took out a handgun and shot Harris. Harris succumbed to his injuries on August 2, 2018, at Duke University Medical Center.
Following the shooting, Wiley's girlfriend, Ashley Richardson, 29, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact. She was seen driving Wiley away from the scene of the shooting. Roxboro Police Chief David Hess expressed his condolences to the Harris family and emphasized the need for public assistance in apprehending Wiley, who was considered armed and dangerous. An arrest warrant for murder was issued for Wiley, and a reward was offered for information leading to his arrest.
On August 17, 2018, Terrel Wiley was arrested by U.S. Marshals in Orange County without incident. Roxboro Police Chief David Hess praised the efforts of the U.S. Marshal Service and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Roxboro Police Department. Wiley was taken into custody and held in the Person County Jail without bond. The arrest brought some measure of closure to the Harris family, but the tragic loss of Daquan Harris remains a poignant reminder of the senseless violence that claimed his life.
