Jahlil Deneil Teachey, a 17-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on November 3, 2018, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Jahlil, affectionately known as "Juice" and "TJ," was a student at Wayne Academy School in Goldsboro. He was found suffering from a gunshot wound to the face on Banks Avenue just before 11:30 a.m. on the day of his death.
Despite being transported to Wayne UNC Vidant Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Following an investigation, it was determined that Jahlil had been shot by a 16-year-old acquaintance, Xzavier Jaknowledge Mickens. The incident led to Mickens being charged with involuntary manslaughter. Warrants for Mickens' arrest were issued on November 23, 2018, and he subsequently surrendered to authorities on November 27, 2018. Mickens was held under a $10,002 secured bond and was scheduled to appear in court.
The investigation revealed that two guns were found at the scene of the shooting. The Wayne County District Attorney's Office was involved in the decision to charge Mickens with involuntary manslaughter. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of gun violence among teenagers and the impact it had on the Goldsboro community.
Jahlil's death was a significant loss to his family and friends, who remembered him as an amazing young man with a genuine spirit. His passing left a void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
