Keith Presnell, a 27-year-old white male from Summerfield, Ohio, was tragically murdered on November 30, 2018, in Goldsboro, North Carolina. He was found dead alongside his girlfriend, Kathryn B. McCloud, a 25-year-old white female from Goldsboro, in a house owned by McCloud's grandmother. The incident occurred early in the morning, just before 6 a.m., when the Wayne County 911 Center received a call from McCloud's grandmother, reporting the shooting.

Mackie, a 49-year-old white male and McCloud's uncle, was arrested at the scene and charged with two counts of murder. Mackie, who resided at the same house, was believed to be off his medications for bipolar disorder at the time of the incident. According to the 911 call, Mackie claimed that Presnell and McCloud were trying to kill him, prompting him to shoot them both.
Upon arrival, deputies detained Mackie and entered the home, where they found the victims' bodies. McCloud's grandmother described the scene as having a significant amount of blood and stated that Mackie was looking out the window for the police while smoking a cigarette after the shooting. Mackie was taken into custody and charged with two counts of murder.
The investigation revealed that Presnell had traveled to North Carolina in search of work and had met McCloud during his stay. The couple had visited Presnell's family in Noble County, Ohio, just a week before the murder, and nothing seemed out of the ordinary during their visit. Presnell's family described him as an active, courteous, and hardworking man who was not involved in drugs.
