Monica Kathleen Smith, a 26-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on May 25, 2019, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Monica was a single mother and a veteran of the United States Army. She was found inside her home on Catherine Simmons Avenue in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood, suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite being transported to Atrium Health's Carolinas Medical Center, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
