On the morning of January 19, 1999, a neighbor taking a walk along Southeast Taylor Street in Portland, Oregon, noticed a canvas bag that seemed out of place in the driveway of a vacant home. The bag hadn't been there the day before, prompting a call to the police. When officers arrived at the property, they made a grim discovery inside the bag: the body of 24-year-old Caucasian female, Veronica Sue James. An autopsy would later reveal that the young woman had died from traumatic head injuries.
