Nicholas J. Ellis, a 25-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on April 18, 2021, in Wilson, North Carolina. Nicholas, affectionately known as "Little Nick," was a beloved member of his community, remembered for his kind-hearted nature and his passion for basketball. He left behind two daughters, Azariah and Nikia Ellis, and a son, Nicholas Ellis Jr., along with his parents, Albert and Theresa Ellis, and numerous other family members.

Police responded to a call for an escort to remove belongings along the 800 block of Gay Street. Shortly after, a report came in about a fight in the vicinity. Upon arrival, officers discovered Nicholas J. Ellis with a fatal gunshot wound at Pender Street Park. The investigation quickly led to the arrest of David L. Alston, a 42-year-old male from Wilson, who turned himself in to the authorities. Alston was charged with first-degree murder and is being held without bond.
