On June 23, 2023, 35-year-old Mallory Angel Armijo was fatally shot outside a 7-Eleven store near the Las Vegas Strip. The incident occurred around 12:16 a.m. on East Sahara Avenue. According to her sister, Rachel Wright, the tragedy unfolded after Armijo took a salad from the store without paying, intending to feed her hungry girlfriend. An argument ensued between Armijo and the store clerk, identified as 35-year-old Ranier Jefferson.
Surveillance footage revealed that Jefferson confronted Armijo outside the store, attempting to retrieve the salad by pulling on her purse straps. When Armijo resisted, Jefferson punched her in the head, causing her to fall to the ground. A friend accompanying Armijo intervened, drawing a handgun but not pointing it at anyone, and urged Jefferson to stop the assault. Jefferson then retrieved the salad, threw Armijo's purse into the parking lot, and returned inside the store. As Armijo and her friend walked away, Jefferson emerged from the store holding a handgun and, according to witnesses, fired three rounds, two of which struck Armijo in the back. She was transported to Sunrise Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Jefferson, a two-time convicted felon prohibited from possessing firearms, was arrested on June 28. He faces charges including open murder with a deadly weapon and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. The 7-Eleven corporation's policies explicitly prohibit employees from bringing weapons to the store and from confronting or chasing customers suspected of shoplifting. Instead, employees are instructed to document suspect descriptions and report thefts to management or law enforcement. Jefferson's actions violated these protocols, leading to the fatal confrontation.
Armijo was a devoted mother of four children, aged 2, 7, 8, and 15. Her family described her as a loving and positive individual who always forgave others and maintained a happy spirit. In the wake of her death, a GoFundMe campaign titled 'Support Mallory's Children: A Legacy of Love' was established to assist her children and ensure they receive the care and opportunities Armijo envisioned for them.
