Daquan Mokare Mercer, a 21-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on June 9, 2021, in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. The incident occurred around 1:10 a.m. in the area of Herrington Road and B Street. When officers arrived at the scene, they found Daquan Mercer unresponsive in the grass with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mercer resided on Rhonda Road in Elizabeth City.
Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the Elizabeth City police. On July 6, 2021, detectives served indictments on 20-year-old Kennedy Griffin, charging her with murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and conspiracy to commit murder. The investigation revealed that the shooting happened just about 24 hours after another man was shot in the back while driving on Roanoke Avenue. No arrests have been made in that case.
