Samuel Sherrod Gregory, a 58-year-old African American male, passed away on November 27, 2021, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Known for his humor and skills as a carpenter and cement finisher, Samuel was born on March 29, 1963, in Derita, NC. He was the 12th of 16 children of Paul and Anna Gregory. Samuel attended Derita Elementary School, Herbert Spaugh Junior High School, and Harry P. Harding Senior High School.
After high school, he worked with his father in construction and continued in that trade until his death. Those who loved him described him as straightforward, forgiving, smart, a loyal friend, kind-hearted, a serious comedian who used humor to deal with life’s stresses, protector, musical, and uncommonly insightful.
On the evening of November 27, 2021, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a domestic violence call just before 6 p.m. on Sadler Road near Dixie River Road. Upon arrival, officers found Samuel Sherrod Gregory, 58, suffering from a gunshot wound inside the home. MEDIC pronounced him dead at the scene. The police investigation revealed that the shooting was a result of a domestic violence incident. On December 17, 2021, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police announced that no charges would be filed in connection to the deadly shooting, as it was ruled justified.
The incident was part of a violent weekend in Charlotte, where three people were killed and two others severely wounded in separate shootings. Samuel Sherrod Gregory's death was one of the three homicides that occurred within a 15-hour period. The other victims included a 14-year-old girl and a 34-year-old man. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department reported at least 88 homicides in the city in 2021, highlighting the ongoing issue of violence in the area.
