Roy Lewis Moore Sr., a 71-year-old African American man from Winston-Salem, NC, tragically passed away on December 25, 2021. He was born on March 30, 1950, in Surry County, North Carolina. Mr. Moore was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, four sisters, and five brothers. He is survived by his wife Hattie Mae Simmons Moore, three daughters, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
On the morning of December
25, 2021, Mr. Moore was shot during an attempted robbery at his residence on New Walkertown Road in Winston-Salem. The suspect, Roman Robert Nelson Jr., a 20-year-old man from Kernersville, NC, was attempting to rob Mr. Moore when an exchange of gunfire occurred. Both Mr. Moore and another victim, Rodney Delane Lindsey, were shot and taken to a local hospital. Unfortunately, Mr. Moore succumbed to his injuries, while Mr. Lindsey remained in critical but stable condition.
The Winston-Salem Police Department responded to the scene and located Mr. Moore and Mr. Lindsey with gunshot wounds. Detectives determined that the shooting stemmed from the attempted robbery. Nelson was later found at a Greensboro hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and was taken into custody. He was charged with the shooting death of Mr. Moore and is facing life in prison or the death penalty.

His funeral services were held on January 4, 2022, at Spencer Funeral Home in Mount Airy, NC, with burial following at Strickland and McCarther Cemetery.
