Alexander 'Alex' Jacob Clukey, a 15-year-old boy from Beulaville, North Carolina, tragically passed away on January 3, 2022. Alex was born on September 4, 2006, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He was a bright, outgoing, and humble young man who loved outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, paintball, and playing baseball. Indoors, he enjoyed wrestling, playing the piano, performing card tricks, and playing video games.
Alex was deeply religious, having accepted Christ as his Savior at a young age, and he continued to grow stronger in his faith each day. He was a Senior Patrol Leader in his Royal Rangers chapter at his home church, Christian Life Fellowship, where he took pride in leading younger boys in learning to honor God while also learning survival skills, first aid, and safety.
On December 28, 2021, Alex was accidentally shot by his father, John Clukey, who is a detective with the Jacksonville Police Department. The incident occurred while they were playing with Airsoft guns in their yard. John Clukey mistakenly drew his real gun instead of the Airsoft gun and shot Alex in the head. Despite immediate efforts to save him, Alex succumbed to his injuries on January 3, 2022, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville.
The investigation into the shooting was conducted by District Attorney Ben David, who represents New Hanover and Pender counties. After a thorough review, it was determined that the shooting was accidental, and no charges were filed against John Clukey. The District Attorney concluded that there was no evidence of unlawful conduct or criminal intent, and the incident was deemed a tragic accident. The investigation originally began with District Attorney Ernie Lee, who recused himself from the case on January 12, 2022.
Alex is survived by his parents, John and Wendy Clukey, and his younger brothers, Andrew and Abram. He was remembered as a respectful teenager with a gentle spirit who loved his family deeply. Alex's passing left a profound impact on his community, and his memory continues to be cherished by those who knew him.
