Kevin Lamont Rockemore, a 38-year-old African American male from Winterville, North Carolina, was found dead on August 23, 2022. The incident occurred at the intersection of Joel Drive and Lee Court in Greenville, North Carolina. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Rockemore inside an SUV that had been shot at multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent gunshot wounds.
The Greenville Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the
shooting. Less than 24 hours after the incident, detectives obtained a warrant charging 19-year-old Ja'len Elijah Everett with murder. Everett, who is described as 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 160 pounds, was considered armed and dangerous. Detectives did not believe the shooting was random, suggesting that there may have been a motive behind the attack.
The search for Everett continued for several weeks. On October 4, 2022, Greenville police, in collaboration with the Major Crimes Unit, the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team, the Pitt County Sheriff's Office, the Wake County Sheriff's Office, and the SBI Criminal Apprehension team, arrested Everett at a location on East Corbett Street in Greenville. He was taken into custody and held without bond.
The investigation into Rockemore's death revealed that the shooting was not a random act of violence. However, details about the motive behind the attack and any potential connections between Rockemore and Everett have not been disclosed. The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to gather evidence and build their case against Everett.
