In the line of duty, Alexandria Police Officer Joseph D. James, a 57-year-old male, lost his life on December 4, 1908. A veteran of the department for 12 years, Officer James was a husband and a father to nine children. The fateful day unfolded as he and a fellow officer, Joe Baio, responded to a residence in the Lower 3rd area of the city to apprehend a suspect wanted for murder.
