In the late summer of 2024, the life of 35-year-old Eric Steven Vandersypen was tragically cut short in Alexandria, Louisiana. On August 9, 2024, Vandersypen was shot on Polk Street and was subsequently rushed to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Despite medical efforts, the male victim succumbed to his gunshot wound three days later, on August 12, 2024.
His passing marked a somber turn in what began as a violent altercation.
Eric was remembered as a man who wore his heart on his sleeve, a fierce protector and loyal friend to those he held dear. He was a loving husband to his wife of 15 years, Kendra, and a devoted father to his three daughters. Those who knew him recalled a great intelligence that lay behind a mischievous smile, a man who loved his family, especially his girls, above all else. His favorite song was 'Mo City Don' by Z-Ro, a testament to his personality.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials began an investigation that quickly led to a suspect. Zachary Bonier, a 37-year-old man, was initially arrested on charges of attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. Following Vandersypen's death, the gravity of the situation escalated, and the charges against Bonier were upgraded to second-degree murder by the Rapides Parish Coroner's Office.
The community was left to mourn the loss of a husband, father, son, and brother. Memorial services were held on August 22, 2024, where family and friends gathered to remember a man taken too soon.
