Montravious Re’Nard Gibson Sr., a 38-year-old Black man, was killed on the morning of March 7, 2023, in Alexandria, Louisiana, in a burst of gunfire that drew police to the area around South Street and Furby Street. Officers were dispatched at about 8:17 a.m. after reports of shots fired in the 1000 block of South Street, and when they arrived they found Gibson lying on Furby Street near its intersection with South Street, already dead at the scene.
The location sat in a mixed residential-and-business stretch behind the main U.S. Postal Service facility, a detail that underscored how public the violence was. Accounts tied to the initial investigation described a heavy volume of gunfire—witnesses reportedly telling investigators they heard more than 25 shots—before the neighborhood fell into the stunned quiet that follows when the sirens arrive and the crime-scene tape goes up.
As detectives worked the case that day, Alexandria Police identified a suspect description early and moved quickly to make an arrest. Donquil Gatson, 25, of Alexandria, was arrested and booked on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with Gibson’s death.
