On a Tuesday in July of 1977, a domestic disturbance call led to the untimely death of a dedicated public servant. Sergeant Merlin Eugene Brune Jr., a 37-year-old male officer with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life in the line of duty on July 12th of that year. A twelve-year veteran of the force and a United States Navy veteran, he was responding to a report of a domestic dispute in the 500 block of Oak Avenue in Bridge City, Louisiana. The call originated from the estranged girlfriend of the suspect in Westwego, who reported a disturbance and the theft of her groceries.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement at the suspect's residence in Bridge City, the man retreated inside his home. As Sergeant Brune and other officers attempted to peacefully negotiate his surrender, the situation escalated dramatically. The suspect opened fire through the front door of the house, striking and fatally wounding Sergeant Brune. In the tense moments that followed, the gunman surrendered to the authorities.
The man responsible for Sergeant Brune's death was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings. He was ultimately found guilty of manslaughter and received a sentence of 21 years in prison for his actions that day. The loss of Sergeant Brune was deeply felt by his family and the community he served. He was survived by his wife and two children. In a poignant turn of events, he had been scheduled to receive his degree in Criminal Justice from Our Lady of Holy Cross College on the very day he was killed.
