In the city of New Orleans on November 17, 1979, Ronald Leon Duplechain, a 27-year-old male New Orleans Police Department patrolman, found himself in a fatal confrontation while off-duty. Duplechain, a United States military veteran who had served on the police force for four years, was at a payphone when a disturbance broke out nearby. A man involved in the altercation brandished a pistol and began threatening several people.
Reacting to the escalating danger, Patrolman Duplechain
identified himself as a police officer and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Despite his efforts to calm the gunman, the assailant shot Duplechain in the chest. In a final act of bravery, the wounded officer returned fire, striking his attacker in the leg. Tragically, Ronald Leon Duplechain succumbed to his gunshot wound and died at Charity Hospital.
Following the incident, the suspect who had been shot by Duplechain was apprehended and subsequently charged with murder. The slain officer, a respected member of the police force, was survived by his parents and eleven siblings, one of whom also served with the New Orleans Police Department. His courageous intervention in the face of imminent danger was a testament to his dedication to public service, even when not officially on duty.
