Kyron Peters was a 19-year-old Black man with a promising future in sports. A student at Booker T. Washington High School in New Orleans, he played on both the football and basketball teams and dreamed of one day playing in the NBA. His family described him as a talented athlete. His mother, Earsel Peters, remembered their last conversation before he left for a party. "He walked out the door, and he said, 'Ma, I love you,'" she recalled.
"I said, 'I love you too, be safe, son.'" She said she never imagined in a million years that her son would be dead.
In the early morning hours of December 26, 2022, the day after Christmas, tragedy struck at a house party in the Lower Ninth Ward. Just after 12:30 a.m., someone entered the gathering at a short-term rental in the 2000 block of St. Maurice Avenue and began shooting. Kyron was found outside suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Another guest, 19-year-old Courtney Hughes, was also killed. The gunfire wounded four other teenagers: a 17-year-old female, an 18-year-old female, and two 18-year-old males.
The New Orleans Police Department launched an investigation into the mass shooting. At the scene, officers recovered numerous cartridge casings from multiple firearms, indicating that more than one person had been shooting. Investigators gathered evidence from surveillance footage, witness information, and social media. Anonymous tips to Crimestoppers also proved crucial in helping detectives identify a suspect. The investigation suggested there may have been an ongoing conflict between the suspect and Kyron Peters, who had been a former basketball teammate.
On January 10, 2023, authorities arrested Elijah Williams in connection with the shooting. He was subsequently indicted on two counts of second-degree murder for the deaths of Kyron Peters and Courtney Hughes, along with four counts of attempted second-degree murder for the surviving victims.
The case concluded more than a year later. On May 8, 2024, Elijah Williams pleaded guilty to amended charges: two counts of manslaughter, four counts of attempted second-degree murder, and one count of obstruction of justice. Later that month, a judge sentenced Williams to 30 years in prison, with the sentences for each count to run concurrently. The case was officially closed as of May 2024.
