In the early evening of December 15, 2024, the Gentilly neighborhood of New Orleans was shattered by an act of violence that claimed the life of 21-year-old Nathan Coleman Jr., a Black male. The incident unfolded around 7 p.m. in the 6100 block of Franklin Avenue, outside the Franklin Discount store. A suspect opened fire into a parking lot, resulting in a quadruple shooting.
Coleman was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
The shooting also resulted in the death of 16-year-old Camren Dent, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other victims, a 17-year-old boy and a 22-year-old man, were also injured in the gunfire and required hospitalization. The New Orleans Police Department has released surveillance footage showing the unidentified suspect firing multiple shots from the corner of a fence. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the suspect remains at large.
Nathan Coleman Jr. was a native of New Orleans and had deep roots in the community. He was a creative and industrious young man who had started his own motorcycle mechanic business. Known for his discipline and drive, he was an alumnus of the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy. He also had a passion for sports, having played football and baseball, and was an active member of the NOLA Bike Life community. The investigation into his death is ongoing, and authorities are asking for anyone with information to come forward.
