In the late hours of a Wednesday evening in Abbeville, Louisiana, the community was unknowingly on the brink of a tragedy that would claim the life of one of its own. Patrolling the streets at 11:40 p.m. on December 23, 1992, was Patrolman First Class John Mark 'Dooley' Hardy, a 28-year-old officer with two and a half years of service with the Abbeville Police Department.
At the intersection of Felicity Street and Schlessinger Street, he initiated a traffic stop, a routine procedure that would soon turn fatal.
As Hardy was in the process of arresting the driver of the vehicle due to outstanding warrants, a passenger exited the car. In a sudden and violent act, the passenger approached the unsuspecting officer from behind and fired a. 45 caliber handgun at point-blank range, striking him in the head. The gravely wounded officer was immediately transported to a local hospital in Abbeville, but the severity of his injury was too great. Just after midnight, in the early moments of December 24, 1992, he was pronounced dead.
The senseless killing of Officer Hardy, a man whose father and brother had also served as the Police Chief of the Abbeville Police Department, sent shockwaves through the community. He was survived by his wife, daughter, parents, six brothers, and a step-brother. The perpetrator of this heinous crime was subsequently apprehended by law enforcement. Following the arrest, the suspect faced the judicial system, which ultimately led to a conviction. For the murder of Patrolman First Class John Mark Hardy, the individual was sentenced to life in prison, ensuring that the person responsible for this tragic loss would be held accountable for their actions.
