In the late spring of 2018, the community of Abbeville, Louisiana, was shaken by a violent act that claimed the life of 26-year-old Heikeem Jaleel Hebert. On the evening of May 26th, the sound of gunfire pierced the air near the intersection of South East and 7th Streets. When police arrived, they discovered a vehicle that had crashed, and inside, they found Hebert, who had been fatally wounded by gunshots.
For nearly four years, the investigation into Hebert's death continued, with
detectives meticulously gathering a significant amount of physical and forensic evidence. While a suspect was identified early on in the investigation, authorities lacked the sufficient evidence to secure an arrest warrant. The case remained a painful open wound for Hebert's loved ones and the community.
A breakthrough finally came in April 2022. Armed with new forensic evidence reports that directly linked a suspect to the crime, Abbeville police moved forward. They arrested 36-year-old Daniel Paul Simon, who was already in custody at the Vermilion Parish Correctional Center on unrelated charges. Simon was subsequently booked on a warrant for the first-degree murder of Heikeem Jaleel Hebert, bringing a long-awaited development in a case that had haunted the city of Abbeville for years.
