On March 10, 1999, Vaniaro T. Jackson, a 19-year-old African American male, was tragically killed during a shooting spree at the New St. John Fellowship Baptist Church in Gonzales, Louisiana. The incident occurred during an evening church service when Shon Miller, a 22-year-old homeless man, entered the church and began shooting indiscriminately.
