According to law enforcement, the breakthrough in the case came after new information surfaced, corroborating earlier statements made by one of the suspects. Darrell V. Armstrong reportedly confessed to his involvement, admitting that Gretchen Bell had paid him $5,000 to help orchestrate her husband's murder. Armstrong claimed that he and Billy Paul Marks went to the Bell residence on the night of the killing. He further alleged that while he backed out of the initial plan, it was Marks who ultimately shot and killed David Bell.
Investigators stated that a potential witness had come forward, providing the necessary corroboration to move forward with the arrests. The alleged motive behind the murder-for-hire scheme was financial, with Gretchen Bell reportedly seeking to collect on life insurance policies. At the time of the arrests, it was revealed that the murder weapon had never been recovered, with only bullet fragments found during the initial autopsy. Following the arrests, all three suspects were held in the Livingston Parish jail.
