In the summer of 2017, the quiet community of Walker, Louisiana, was disturbed by the violent death of a local man. Rick McBride, a 61-year-old self-employed structural detailer, was found fatally shot in his home on Pine Park Drive on July 22, 2017. The discovery of his body launched a homicide investigation that would lead authorities across state lines in pursuit of a group of young suspects.
Investigators determined that the motive behind the killing was a planned burglary.
The perpetrators intended to steal money and guns from McBride's residence. When McBride confronted them during the break-in, he was shot and killed. The subsequent investigation quickly identified several individuals believed to be involved in the crime. A significant break in the case came when four suspects were apprehended by Border Patrol agents near El Paso, Texas. The group, consisting of three men and one woman, were found with firearms and ammunition in their possession and had warrants out for their arrest in connection with the murder.
Multiple arrests were made in the wake of McBride's death. Blayson Fife and Joe Anthony Baluch were identified as the primary suspects and faced charges of first-degree murder and aggravated burglary. Several others, including Kerstin Avery, Kameron Jones, and Trevor Lockett, were charged as accessories after the fact to first-degree murder. Another individual, Jace Chiquelin, and a juvenile were also later arrested in connection to the case.
In August 2019, one of the main suspects, Blayson Fife, was brought to trial. After a little over an hour of deliberation, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder and aggravated burglary. Following his conviction, Fife was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The successful prosecution was aided by forensic evidence, including cell phone tower data, which corroborated witness testimony.
