In the spring of 2009, the life of a young Baton Rouge man was cut short in a burst of violence that would later be tied to a larger web of crime. Twenty-year-old Marcus 'Gangsta' Thomas, an African American male, was fatally shot on April 25, 2009, while driving his car in what investigators determined was an ambush-style attack. Multiple firearms were discharged at his vehicle, indicating a coordinated and intentional killing. The initial investigation into his murder did not immediately lead to the apprehension of any suspects, leaving a void of information for his family and the community.
The circumstances surrounding Thomas's death remained a mystery for some time, but the case was eventually cracked open as part of a much larger investigation into a series of homicides that plagued Baton Rouge between 2009 and 2010. A teenager named Michael 'Marlo Mike' Louding became the central figure in this string of violent crimes. During questioning by law enforcement, Louding, who was only 17 at the time of his arrest, confessed to his involvement in several murders, including that of Marcus Thomas. He admitted to being one of the individuals who opened fire on Thomas's vehicle on that fateful day.
Louding's confession provided a motive for the killing that had previously been unknown. He implicated local rapper Torrence Hatch, also known as Lil Boosie, in the crime. According to Louding, Hatch had hired him to carry out the hit on Thomas. The alleged reason for the murder-for-hire plot was that Thomas had robbed the rapper at some point prior to the shooting. This revelation transformed the case from what might have been considered random street violence into a calculated act of retaliation.
Michael Louding was subsequently arrested and charged with a multitude of crimes, including the murder of Marcus Thomas. His confession to being a teenage hitman sent shockwaves through the community. Louding was ultimately held accountable for his role in numerous violent acts. In a 2015 court proceeding related to another murder, the homicide of Marcus Thomas was presented as evidence of a pattern of ambush-style shootings Louding had participated in.
