In the early morning hours of September 30, 2011, Sergeant Paul Berches Stuckey, a 47-year-old male agent with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, was responding to a report of night hunting in a wooded area of West Feliciana Parish. At approximately 2:15 a.m., he made his last communication with dispatch, indicating he was investigating the complaint.
As the sun began to rise, his body was discovered by fishermen near an old ferry landing along the Mississippi River, just outside of St. Francisville. He was found next to his patrol vehicle with a single shotgun wound to his chest.
Initially, the circumstances surrounding Sergeant Stuckey's death led investigators to treat the case as a homicide. The mysterious and violent nature of his death, alone in the dark woods, sparked concerns of foul play. For a period, the investigation explored the possibility that he had been shot and killed by an unknown assailant while carrying out his duties.
