In the days leading up to her second birthday, a young female child named Keira Holmes was fatally struck by a stray bullet in a tragic shooting on December 18, 2011, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Keira, who was just one year old at the time, was playing in the courtyard of the B.W. Cooper apartment complex when the incident occurred. A vehicle drove by and unleashed a hail of gunfire, with one of the bullets striking the toddler in the head.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries. The shooting also left a 19-year-old man, identified as Emmett Allen, critically wounded and paralyzed. Authorities later determined that Allen was the intended target of the attack.
The senseless death of Keira Holmes sparked outrage and calls for an end to the rampant gun violence that plagued the city. In the wake of the shooting, community members held vigils and rallies, demanding justice for the young victim and a concerted effort to make the streets safer for children. The New Orleans Police Department, aided by numerous tips from the public, launched an intensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for the heinous crime that cut short a promising young life.
The investigation led to the arrests of several individuals in connection with the shooting. Among those taken into custody was Tyrone 'T-bone' Knockum, who was identified as one of the alleged triggermen. Another suspect, Terrious Owney, was apprehended by U.S. Marshals in Georgia. Narkee Hunter was also arrested in the days following the incident. A fourth man, who was killed in a separate incident shortly after Keira's death, was also linked to the shooting. In October 2019, one of the five men indicted in the case, Darius Knox, entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors. Knox pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact to murder and attempted murder. He was subsequently sentenced to 27 years in prison for his role in the shooting that resulted in the death of Keira Holmes and the paralysis of Emmett Allen.
