Ramal Ellis, a 23-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on the night of November 17, 2013, in St. Rose, Louisiana. Ellis was walking home from a friend's house when he was fatally shot multiple times, just a block away from his residence. His parents, Ruthell and Lamar Ellis, heard the gunshots but initially mistook them for firecrackers. When Lamar Ellis went to investigate, he found his son lying on the ground, identified by his distinctive tennis shoes.
