In a heart-wrenching incident in Shreveport, Louisiana, 19-month-old Kayson Wright, a male toddler, lost his life on Friday, February 7, 2020. The tragic event unfolded in a home in the Queensborough neighborhood on Merwin Street, just off Jewella Avenue. Responding to a call about a shooting, officers discovered the young boy with a critical gunshot wound to his chest.
He was immediately transported to Ochsner LSU Hospital for medical attention.
Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Kayson succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The subsequent investigation by Shreveport police detectives involved questioning everyone present at the scene. It was determined that the child's father, 29-year-old Derrick Wright, was mishandling a rifle when it discharged. The bullet struck his young son, leading to the fatal injury.
Following the investigation, Derrick Wright was taken into custody and charged with one count of manslaughter. He admitted to authorities that he was in the process of clearing the rifle when the weapon fired, striking his son in the chest. Derrick Wright was subsequently booked into the Caddo Correctional Center. A judge set his bond at $250,000. The case highlighted the devastating consequences of mishandling firearms, leaving a family and community to mourn the loss of a young life.
