On a tragic day in September 2009, two-year-old Mason William Carter, a male child, was killed in a violent series of events that unfolded in Holden, Louisiana. The devastating incident, which also claimed the lives of his father and grandmother, was orchestrated by his own grandfather in a horrific murder-suicide.
The day took a dark turn when authorities were called to a residence where gunshots had been reported.
Inside, they discovered the bodies of 49-year-old Donna Carter and her 26-year-old son, Dennis Carter Jr. Outside the home, young Mason Carter was also found deceased. The sole survivor within the immediate family at the scene was Mason's pregnant mother, Amber Carter, who had been critically injured by gunfire. Despite her injuries, she would later give birth to a baby girl. Another young child present in the house at the time of the shootings was physically unharmed.
The perpetrator of this family tragedy was identified as Mason's grandfather, Dennis Carter Sr. Approximately twenty minutes after the shootings, law enforcement officers located him driving on a highway. As they attempted to pull him over, Carter Sr. took his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive for the violent rampage appeared to be rooted in a tumultuous relationship with his wife, Donna. Records indicated a history of domestic issues, with Dennis Carter Sr. having been arrested multiple times in the year leading up to the incident for violating a protective order and for domestic abuse.
Further investigation revealed that a day before the fatal shootings, one of Dennis Carter Sr.'s other sons had received a threatening call from his father and had reported it to the sheriff's office. He had been advised of the necessary procedures to have his father arrested but had not completed the process by the time of the tragic events. As the perpetrator died by suicide, there were no arrests or trials of any other suspects in connection with the deaths of Mason William Carter, his father, and his grandmother.
