In the late hours of a Sunday evening in Houma, Louisiana, a violent altercation tragically cut short the life of 46-year-old Travis Michael Moses Sr. on December 1, 2013. The male victim was a resident of Houma and a retired U.S. Army veteran. The incident, which also resulted in injuries to a woman, unfolded at a home on St. Charles Street.
Responding to a call around 10:30 p.m., Houma Police discovered Moses and an injured woman at the residence. Both had sustained gunshot wounds.
Emergency services transported them to a local hospital, where Moses was pronounced dead. The female victim was treated for a gunshot wound to her leg and survived.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, 45-year-old Kerry Starks, also a resident of Houma. According to authorities, the violence erupted from a domestic dispute between Starks and the female victim. Investigators believe that after shooting the woman, Starks then turned the weapon on Moses.
Following the incident, Starks fled the scene, prompting a search by law enforcement. He was apprehended the following day and subsequently booked into the Terrebonne Parish jail. He faced a charge of manslaughter in connection with the death of Travis Moses, as well as a charge of attempted second-degree murder for the shooting of the female victim. He was also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. A judge set his bail at $2 million.
