A night that should have been filled with the laughter and energy of a teenage party ended in tragedy, forever silencing the voice of 15-year-old Marcell Franklin. On a spring evening in March 2014, Marcell, a ninth-grade student at Zachary High School, was attending a gathering at the Baker Civic Club in Baker, Louisiana. The festive atmosphere was shattered by the eruption of gunfire, a violent intrusion that would claim the lives of three young people and leave a community in mourning.
In the chaotic moments that unfolded, Marcell was fatally wounded, her life cut short in an act of senseless violence. Alongside her, 18-year-old Diontrey Claiborne and 15-year-old Kendal Dorsey also lost their lives. Another teenager, believed to be the intended target of the attack, was injured but survived. The sudden and brutal nature of the event sent shockwaves through the local area, leaving friends and family to grapple with an unimaginable loss. Marcell, who was a twin, was remembered as a young life full of promise, tragically extinguished before she had the chance to fully blossom.
The investigation into the triple homicide led to the arrest of Nakeydran Williams, who was 16 years old at the time of the shooting. The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the pain of their loss would remain. In February 2016, Williams pleaded guilty to three counts of manslaughter and one count of attempted second-degree murder. For his role in the deaths of Marcell Franklin, Diontrey Claiborne, and Kendal Dorsey, he was sentenced to serve 40 years in prison, a conclusion to a case that left an indelible scar on the heart of the Baker community.
