In the late evening of Sunday, May 25, 2014, Clarence Wilson, a 43-year-old Black male, was found shot multiple times near the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and America Street in New Orleans. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The New Orleans Police Department immediately launched a homicide investigation into Wilson's death.
Through their investigation, detectives identified 22-year-old Jekym Dowell as a suspect in the shooting. In August 2014, police arrested Dowell at his home. A search of the residence uncovered $29,000 in cash, two loaded semi-automatic handguns, 22 grams of crack cocaine, and drug paraphernalia. At the time of his arrest, Dowell was on parole until January 2015.
Jekym Dowell was subsequently charged with one count of second-degree murder for the death of Clarence Wilson. In addition to the murder charge, he faced charges of possession with intent to distribute crack cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The arrest brought a measure of resolution to the investigation into the violent death of Clarence Wilson.
