On a summer evening in New Castle, Delaware, the life of 33-year-old Medford Holmes, a Black male, was tragically cut short. On August 12, 2013, gunshots shattered the night on New Castle Avenue, leaving Holmes with a fatal wound to his upper body. When state troopers arrived after 9 p.m., they discovered him lying near the shoulder of the road. Holmes was rushed to Christiana Hospital Trauma Center, but his injuries proved too severe, and he was pronounced dead.
The violence of that
night was not limited to a single victim. A second man, who was 32 years old at the time, was also struck by multiple gunshots. He was transported to a local hospital in a private vehicle and was admitted in serious condition. It was later revealed that this second victim was Medford Holmes's brother. The shooting is believed to have stemmed from an ongoing dispute with an unknown individual or group.
Just months before his death, Medford Holmes had been cleared of first-degree murder charges from a 2011 incident after a key witness recanted their testimony. His own murder, however, remains an unsolved cold case. The Delaware State Police have continued to seek information from the public, but to date, no arrests have been made, and no suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the shooting that claimed Medford Holmes's life and left his brother seriously wounded. The case stands as a painful, unresolved chapter for his family and community.
